About Toto
Toto was founded in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. Taking their name from the Latin word that means "all all-encompassing," the group was determined to explore every musical style.
In 1981 Toto's third album Turn Back was a complete failure, but they rebound with their fourth release Isolation that features two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and their tour helped them become a household name around the world.
After a brief break, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It is a departure from the ballads of their previous albums and features some heavy rock. It was their first platinum album in North America.
In the course of recording the fifth album, the group loses its manager and faces financial challenges. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name to an alternative producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as lead singer. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.
In 1999, the band release Mindfields and embarks on an extensive tour across the globe. After several weeks in Europe The band then travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes the cover of Weezer's track Hash Pipe in response to the band performing their hit song Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring group is comprised by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
Music
Toto is an American rock band that enjoyed their biggest success in the eighties. The band was formed by experienced session musicians and has sold more than 40 million albums around the world.
Toto was the first album released by toto in 1978. It was a huge success that catapulted the band into international fame. Since then, the group has released fourteen albums that have also been hits.
Toto composed their first and only movie score in 1984 for the film Dune. This was a huge undertaking and the entire group was required to participate. The album that followed, Kingdom of Desire, was another record that was a huge success. After a world-tour, Bobby Kimball quit the group. He was replaced by Fergie Frederiksen from Le Roux. The band continued to push forward with their fifth album, Isolation. The album contained a variety of hits including "Stranger in Town".
After Isolation, Toto took a break from the spotlight and stepped back from the stage. This gave the members of the band the opportunity to pursue their own projects. In 1996, the band returned for a tour and an album. It was the first time all of the original members were on stage together for over a decade.
The next year, Toto toured together with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band. This was the final time that all the original members of Toto were performing together. Following this, the band was again disbanded. However, Toto reunited in 2010 to perform a benefit show for the ALS Foundation. This was the first time that all of the original Toto members appeared performing together for over 31 years. The original group was joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.
Tours
Toto has been one of the most popular rock bands for over three decades, scoring megahits such as "Rosanna," "Hold The Line," and their 8X-platinum smash, "Africa." The band's anthemic arena-rock is inspired by a variety of styles, including progressive rock, world rhythms, jazz, and soul.
Despite their acclaim the group had to face a number of setbacks in their later years. In 2002, keyboardist David Paich and drummer Greg Phillinganes took a medical leave of absence. Shem von Schröeck was brought in to replace him however, the group wasn't the same without Paich or Phillinganes. In 2008, a string lineup changes and a series of disappointing albums led Toto to call it quits for a couple of years. However, the group resumed touring in 2012 following the release of their album 40 Trips Around the Sun.
The album marked a return to their best form, and the tour that accompanied it featured sold-out shows in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion was bolstered by the addition of guitarist Steve Lukather and bassist Shem von Schroeck, both of whom had rejoined the band.
Toto's music is just as relevant today as it was in the 1970s and 80s and getting new fans with every new generation. Their success has made them a permanent part of pop culture and their live shows are always filled with energy and excitement.
